What is a School of Choice?

Schools of choice have a theme or specialized programming that is different from other neighborhood schools. They are designed to attract students with common interests or skill sets.

Elementary #8 will have an accelerated curriculum in math and English language arts. It will also use Project Lead the Way as part of STEAM programming. It will be a Leader in Me® campus, following a program that empowers students with the leadership and life skills they need to thrive in the 21st century based on Franklin Covey’s book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

Leader in Me® Campus

It is based on principles and practices of personal, interpersonal and organizational effectiveness, and upon the powerful premise that every child possesses unique strengths and has the ability to be a leader.

Leader in Me helps students learn how to become self-reliant, take initiative, plan ahead, set and track goals, do their homework, prioritize their time, manage their emotions, be considerate of others, express their viewpoint persuasively, resolve conflicts, find creative solutions, value differences, and live a balanced life. The process helps students develop the skills and self-confidence they need to lead their lives and succeed in school and beyond.

School Uniforms

School uniforms provide a sense of belonging and pride at Elementary #8. Not having to worry about fashion trends helps students focus on academics and can promote school spirit as well as reduce conflicts among students. School uniforms can also help parents save time and money shopping for school clothes. We will post more details of the dress code as the new school year approaches.

Accelerated Curriculum

Elementary #8 will have an accelerated curriculum in math and English language arts. This accelerated curriculum map will allow students to learn content a grade level above their current grade, in addition to current grade-level standards.

It will also use Project Lead the Way as part of STEAM programming, which will include computer science, robotics and art instruction. These programs engage students in hands-on activities, projects, and problems; empower them to solve real-world challenges; and inspire them to reimagine how they see themselves.
